How to Enable Hidden Dark Theme for Windows 10 How to Enable Hidden Dark Theme for Windows 10

If you use Windows 10 on your computer, you will notice the default theme is very bright and has a lot of white in it. This can be hard on the eyes if you use the computer a lot like me.

But Microsoft have added a hidden dark theme in the Windows 10 build. Its great if you like dark themes.

The dark theme registry tweak only works on Windows Professional, Enterprise, and Education editions of Windows 10. So if you are running a a Home edition version, it won’t work for some strange reason.

Here is how to setup your dark theme in windows 10

1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionThemes

2. Now create a DWORD value named “AppsUseLightTheme” with the value of “0”.

3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionThemes

4. Create a folder called “Personalize”

5. Now create create a DWORD value named “AppsUseLightTheme” with a value of “0”.

That’s it.

  1. You were the perfect instructor. I Followed every step and it worked perfectly! The dark theme is much better on my eyes. Keep up the good work.Thank You. 👍

  2. Just a heads up – you don't have to restart your computer entirely. You can just restart the 'Windows Explorer' application in the task manager. Much faster and simpler.

  3. FFS open some more windows AFTER the colors have been applied… I'd like to see what windows and window components are adjusted to see if it's even worth trying. Are explorer.exe backgrounds still white?

  4. I have had no end of problems with Windows 10 themes, as it will either be missing some features in high contrast or other features non-high contrast. I have been working on fixing this for months and months. I cannot get it to have all features so that they can be altered the way that I need.
    Fucking nightmare!

  5. Hey Brian! I have been keeping up with you for several years and came to realize i may have never properly thanked you for the awesome posts you have been providing. I recall the "permission" glitch you suffered through and wanted to comment then. Realistically, Microsoft should be paying you hard cash for the services you provide. Thanks again for all you are doing and what you do is worth MONEY. It is also very rewarding. Cheers!

  6. A little pity that transparency is not so transparent, the update of win has that setting now, ore i dont see any difference.
Any how my friend thank you.

  7. DONT LISTEN TO THIS GUY. HE WILL MESS YOUR COMPUTER UP. I FOLLOWED HIS INSTRUCTIONS ON THIS VIDEO WORD FOR WORD AND LOST ALL MY SETTINGS. IT MAY WORK FOR HIS COMPUTER, IT MAY NOT WORK FOR YOURS! I AM UNSUBSCRIBING FROM THIS JERK.
