How to Clone a WordPress Website to another Domain Name

Have you ever wondered How to Clone a WordPress Website to another Domain Name? In the past I had always known that it was possible, but I’d never taken the time to look into it. When I decided to look into it more I began to realize that there wasn’t many good solutions out there for cloning a wordpress site.

Luckily, I was able to stumble upon this simple plugin called WP Clone by WP Academy. This plugin made it so much easier for me to quickly clone one wordpress website to another domain name. The process takes just a few minutes as long as you have your wordpress installed on the new domain name that you’ll be cloning the website to. If you need help installing wordpress please feel free to check out my hosting signup and wordpress installation video link below.

As I mention within the video this is an amazing way to speed up the process if you’re a freelance web designer or maybe you work for a small design company. If you have a client who loves the look and feel of a website you’ve already designed than you can speed up the process by cloning that wordpress website to a new domain and than editing it there. I do recommend that you do your best to avoid any duplicate content if you do go this route though, which I also mention in the video.

I hope you all have found this wordpress cloning tutorial helpful. If you have any questions or run into issues along the way please feel free to reach out to me in the comment section below or through my websites contact form.

  1. Very clear tutorial, and it looks very simple, but it gives me an error. It says that one or more tables of the data base are not available. WP gives me the option to repair (copy/past little text in config page), but does not work either. I checked with my host now, to see if they can find the data base error. Would be nice if I got it working like this! I will check your other tutorials as well.

  2. Hi Tom, I already had a wordpress website which I had to use a URL to sign in. I set up another site by adding the new site on the old site but I think I must have missed a stage out because I haven't got a separate URL for the new site. How do I change it to get a separate URL?

  3. OMG I was looking for exactly the same thing with this! I just started my very first paid project in real life and did the project on my own domain. Now I need to duplicate the website to client's domain but I couldn't figure it out FREE. I was wondering if I need to purchase one, but you saved my money!! Thank you very much. I really appreciate this video. 🙂 SUBSCIRBED!

  4. I clicked on the backup button on the original website and after a few minutes (it has a few products with decent sized images) it redirected to a 'page not found' section and no link was ever generated. Tried this again, same result. Some tips?

  5. Hey Tom I would like to do this for a client. Is it possible to build it on my hosting domain, clone it to theirs and then delete the content from my domain?

  6. Finally!!! I've been looking at the other videos and man I gatta say, they do know how to give beginners a headache. Simple terms, you're the best man. Saved me a lot of time and complexity. Thanks a million.

  7. Hi I just did it but now I have 2 websites that are the same but they both use the same domain name so when I type the original sites domain name it goes to the other site?

  8. Great video Tom. Question, once the new site has been cloned can you continue to add content to the old site… create the backup and "ADD THOSE NEW CHANGES" to the new site.

The equivalent of having a dev vs live site. THANKS

  14. Hi Tom! Great lesson! Very clear and concise 🙂 Just one question.
I'm cloning my blog in Spanish into a folder under the same domain in English. Do I have to install WordPress in that folder or it would work with the one I already have installed in my Spanish version?
    Thanks so much!
