In this tutorial I’m going to show you how to create an XML sitemap for your website. XML sitemaps are used by search engines, like Google, to easily find all the content on your website. Have them also helps with SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

The easiest way to create XML sitemap.

Although some people may call them Google XML sitemaps, they are actually a site map of your website that you SUBMIT to Google.

To generate sitemap you something called a sitemap generator (very appropriately named).

The are plugins that are created only as sitemap creator, but there a few plugins that also do multiple things. So you can get two birds with one stone.

One of these multi-function plugins is WordPress SEO by Yoast; that is the plugin we highlight in this tutorial.

So let’s get to it.

To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New.

On the next page type “WordPress SEO by Yoast” into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left.

Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it’s installed.

You will now see an “SEO” menu option in the left sidebar. Hover over it and click on XML Sitemaps.

Upon installation, the plugin generates a sitemap immediately. You can click on the XML Sitemap button to view it.

You can then go into the User Sitemap, Post Types and Taxonomies tabs to define the settings for your new sitemap.

That’s all there is to creating XML Sitemap. I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

  1. Hi, Bjorn, I watched your video and when i got to the part where you hit xml sitemap, i got a blank page in my site.. not sure where to find my sitemap_index.xml, i had previously installed the google xml sitemap

  2. this is the best tutorial to understand the yoast plug in for seo. i have wasted 5 hours to solve the problem but i could not,, this vieo has helped me to figure out and to correct the issue.. thank you very very very much.. keep it up…I am a software engineer. i usually don't comment on any post.. but you have convinced me to comment.. thanx again.. keep it up ..

  3. Hi,
first of all congratulations for your channel. it's really good and helpful. I am having a issue with a site map. actually I am submitting XML site map created by yoast plugin on Google webmaster tools. But when I submit my site map on Google webmaster tools, it says like HTPP 404 error. I am quite upset with issue. hope you can help me in solving this issue as soon as possible.

  4. I used this plugged-in very helpful thoug I have a question, I had seen in others that sitemaps needs to be updated so how will this be updated? Will it be automatically updated or the process will just be redone(putting the xml sitemap in console)? Thanks for the help! PS. I think you need to add the enabling and disenabling the sitemaps in the feature 😀 I thought it was gone as well and had been in a premium version 😀 just saw from another video that its just hidden.! Other than that, the video was great!!

  5. +WPLearningLab Thank you for posting such great content. When I've uploaded the sitemap on google, I’m seeing in the “warnings” section:

“Url blocked by robots.txt. – Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt.”

I’ve created a .txt file through the Yoast plugin, what needs to be in it to make sure that the site maps are not being blocked?

    It currently reads like this:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /wp-admin/
    Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php

  6. Thanks for the information, informative video. My only suggestion, relax on all the popup screens to promote your PDF, site, etc.. It's distracting. Perhaps some in the end of the video would be more effective, that's just my two cents. Thank you again for the video tutorial.

  7. Once you go live make sure you add the XML sitemap to the Google Search Console. There's a Google Search Consult (formerly Google Webmaster Tools) verification tutorial here in case you need it:

  8. Hey, I have one question for you. Does sitemaps have something to do with how big traffic of your website is?
I'm asking this because I connected sitemaps to two websites and one isn't showing it at all on Google, and the other one is only showing the first row (just 2 pages).

    Thanks!

  9. Sir can you please tell me after submitting sitemap how many posts I can add in posts sitemap ..I want to make a website there I want to publish apporximately 5000 posts …

  10. hello sir
i'm unable to find xml site map option . i followed your other trick from previous comments which was to find the xml from generat settings but that is showing the sitemap page that all , no sitemap option in my dashboard . kindly help
