This video shows you how to create a bootable USB Flash Drive Mac OS X Installer. You will be able to boot most Macs from it and then install Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra without needing to re-download the installer for each Mac. You can also use it to format the internal drive of a Mac using the built in Disk Utility, this is also covered in the video.

You will need a 8GB or larger USB Flash Drive (aka USB key). Make sure it’s empty, because you’ll be deleting everything on it during the process of making the installer.

You will use a command in the Terminal. Make sure you type it correctly, or you will get an “unknown command” error. Here is the command for your reference:

sudo /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia –volume /Volumes/SierraBootInstall –applicationpath /Applications/Install macOS Sierra.app –nointeraction &&say Done

  1. Excellent tutorial. Thank you!
    Brilliant idea to right down the sudo command for copy&paste.
    Did you use the low case sierraBootInstall volume name in your video on purpose to keep your reader 'alert''?.

  2. I get a WARNING: Improper use of the sudo command could lead to data loss or the deletion of important system files. Please double-check your typing when using sudo. Type "man Sudo" for more information. (this comes up every time I retype it)
    What do I do?

  3. Hey Mr.Gem.. can you pleeeeese help me! I wanted to wipe an iMac clean for my kid and got to the reinstall part but then it asked for my Apple ID and password and then I got the message ‘this item is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later. It was for Lion OS.. now I can’t get further than this menu and I need to do Option restart with this info you provided. My question is.. can the bootable usB be performed on my MacBook Prob and used as the bootable drive for the iMac ? I was thinking it would not work because it would be through the terminal of MacBook Pro not iMac … what I should have done was prepare for this ahead of time or clone the OS but I didn’t :/ please help me! My friend told me to use el cap installer … I could not find other OS installer in the App Store ! Please please help me ! I really like this old iMac ! I want to work on it more !

  4. I got the USB drive set up and it appears as "Install macOS High Sierra" as it's suppose to, but when I put it into my MacBook and hit Option while starting, it does not come up and only shows the Primary Hard drive!?
    HELP PLEASEEEE
